“Narrating Music”

Our project investigates how Deaf and Hard-of-hearing (DHoH) audiences are disadvantaged by streaming television’s inconsistent captioning of non-lyrical underscore.

A gap in the captioning practices for the audio-visual underscore means exclusion from a crucial dimension of audiovisual storytelling.

We address this inequity while also advancing scholarly understanding of how music conveys meaning when translated into words.

“A Lexicon of Sound”

Through this research project, we aim to create a practical tool to improve consistency and accessibility in music captioning. We also aim to develop theoretical insights into the semiotics of music in audiovisual media
